Overview

During 2021 the Southern Cross Hospital in New Plymouth underwent a considerable upgrade   An extension was constructed and stitched into the existing operational facility, adding two operating theatres, a Daystay ward and a PACU ward.  New plant and plant spaces were provided to serve these new areas.  Existing services, such as medical gases, were extended to serve the new spaces.  The hospital remained operational throughout the project.

In 2024 and into 2025 additional upgrades were carried out throughout the hospital. This included work to existing HVAC systems, passive fire and active fire systems. Final integrated testing was completed in February 2025.

Our role

For the initial hospital expansion project we provided an ICA role to the hospital.  Tasks included:

• Design reviews for commissionability

• Assisting the contractor to develop an integrated commissioning programme and commissioning plans

• Witnessing tests on the HVAC systems

• Reporting on commissioning activities to the client

• Intensive testing and witnessing of the fire alarm system 

 For the upgrade works performed during 2024/25 we conducted thorough testing and witnessing of the fire alarm system.  These tests were repeating several times following any significant modification to the system.
